This lamentation scene, once the property of Roald Dahl, concentrates on the events immediately after Christ's removal from the cross (which can be seen on Mount Calvary in the background). Christ's body is supported by Joseph of Arimathea whilst Nicodemus is by His feet. The Virgin Mary is supported by John the Evangelist and behind her stand the three Maries, Mary Magdalene carries the jar of ointment with which she will anoint Christ's feet. The painting is executed on four wood panels and in the background the resurrection can be seen with Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene. This is an early example of the use of landscapes in paintings: the landscape provides the setting for the biblical events.
Although referred to as the Master of Frankfurt this expert altarpiece artist actually practised in Antwerp. His name derives from the many commissions he received in the period 1490-1520 from Frankfurt merchants.
» Look through a holy book and find an interesting story. Try to tell the story with a picture: Can other people understand the story from your picture?
» Look at other painted versions of this story. How important is the landscape to this artist compared to the others?
