Windsor Castle by C. Morton depicts a distant view of the imposing Royal residence. It has been suggested that it was painted before the modernization of the Castle in 1824. However if we accept that the imposing gentleman in the plumed hat is the Duke of Connaught (third son of Victoria) the painting must have been produced much later as he was not given his title until 1874. This naïve piece contrasts grand architecture with a rural setting.
Nothing is known about this artist. The painting is signed in the bottom left corner and the signature was originally believed to be by ‘Norton’. It has since been reattributed to C.Morton, an artist working at this time about whom nothing is known.
» The painting is thought to show a member of the royal family, a celebrity at the time it was painted. If this was painted today who do you think the artist might include in the painting? Think of a celebrity you particularly like, make a painting of them that shows the way in which they might live.
» The painting shows Windsor Castle, a famous building with some very interested interesting architecture. Find a building you think is particularly interesting; see if you can find out more about it, who built it? What is it made from? What were the designer/architects ideas? Try comparing it with another completely different building; are any of the features the same?
