Paint

Teachers' Information About Paint

Here are some suggestions for paint related discussions and practical activities:

Activity 1: Binding Pigments

Using powder paints as pigments, try experimenting by mixing them with a range of binding liquids, such as oil, water, glue, egg. What differences can the children observe between the paints? Is one easier to use than others? Please be aware of the health and safety issues when carrying out this activity: pupils with breathing problems should stay away from the powdered paints; pupils should wear suitable clothing; pupils must be careful to not lick their fingers whilst using this paint and should wash their hands carefully when finished.

Activity 2: Brash or Delicate?

Ask pupils to create a simple drawing and to copy the drawing onto another piece of paper so there are two versions. On one piece of paper, pupils should paint the picture using big bold brushstrokes. On the second version, pupils should use a thin paintbrush and use small, delicate strokes. Compare the two finished versions. Which do the pupils prefer? How do the different brushstrokes affect the feel of the final painting?

Activity 3: No Paintbrush This Time!

Experiment with different tools and processes for applying paint. Pupils could record their attempts and create a table showing the different effects. Does the thickness of the paint affect the outcome of the results? Possible tools and processes could be: using the hard edge of some cardboard; the end of a sliced vegetable (cut with a smooth and/or serrated knife); a feather; flicking the paint; using a palette knife; blowing paint through a straw.
