Where is Stone From?

Stone is found in various forms in the ground. The type of rock or stone objects that are featured on this website are made from are mainly sedimentary and metamorphic. These types of stone can be found all around the world.

The rock Cycle

Sedimentary rock is made from debris that gathers on the earth’s surface in layers. Over the years, more and more debris gathers on the top. This squashes the debris on the bottom into rock, for example limestone.

Igneous rocks are formed when hot, molten rock from the Earth’s core (called magma) cools and solidifies. Igneous rocks contain crystals of various sizes depending upon whether it has cooled slowly or quickly.

Metamorphic rocks are sedimentary or igneous rocks that receive so much pressure and heat that they change or morph into a completely different type of rock, for example marble. Metamorphic rocks do not include rocks that have melted.
